Vấn đề với Skimming
Reading Passage
Naturally, the course is intended for prospective arson investigators, who can learn all the tricks of the trade for detecting whether a fire was deliberately set, discovering who did it, and establishing a chain of evidence for effective prosecution in a court of law. But wouldn’t this also be the perfect course for prospective arsonists to sign up for? My point is not to criticize academic programs in fire science: they are highly welcome as part of the increasing professionalization of this and many other occupations. However, it’s not unknown for a firefighter to torch a building. This example suggests how dishonest and illegal behavior, with the help of higher education, can creep into every aspect of public and business life.

Có thể thấy, “set fire to buildings” chính là paraphrase của cụm “torch a building” trong bài đọc. Nhiều bạn không tìm được cụm “intend to” của câu hỏi trong bài nên rất dễ chọn NOT GIVEN. Ngược lại, nhiều bạn khi chú ý tới những từ keywords như “dishonest” và “illegal”. Thì thấy những từ này mang nghĩa tiêu cực, nên rất dễ chọn FALSE.
Tuy nhiên, đáp án của câu này lại là TRUE.
Có thể thấy, Scanning không phù hợp với những bạn có vốn từ yếu và trung bình, và rất dễ dẫn đến các bạn ấn sai. Skimming chỉ phù hợp với những bạn có vốn từ siêu tốt, với native speakers (người bản ngữ), những người có khả năng đọc nhanh và nắm ngay được nội dung đoạn nói gì và có khả năng nhận diện paraphrasing tốt.
Vậy, liệu có phương pháp nào phù hợp với những người có vốn từ vựng thấp không?
Câu trả lời chính là Linearthinking.
Linearthinking trong Reading gồm:
Linearthinking = Tư duy tinh giản (Simplification) + Đọc mạch ý (Read connections)
- Simplification (Tinh giản): Đơn giản hoá nội dung bài đọc, chỉ tập trung vào những phần thông tin chính (main idea).
- Read connection (Đọc mạch ý): Đọc mối liên hệ giữa các thông tin trong đoạn nhằm summarise nội dung của đoạn, đồng thời đoán được nghĩa những từ vựng không biết.
