UNIT 1. TENSES, PASSIVE VOICE
I. TIPS ON TENSES
- Present simple
- This tense is used to talk about schedules, timetables and itineraries.
- Ex: The train arrives at 3 p.m tomorrow.
- Present continuous
- This tense is used to talk about fixed future plans
- Ex: My boss is travelling to Australia next month to open a new business
- Present perfect
- For/during/over the past/last X years + Present perfect
- Ex: The semiconductor industry has progressed at a tremendous rate over the last decade.
- Present perfect continuous
- All day long, all the afternoon, all year long…
- Ex: We have been trimming the bushes all day. I’m sorry that the front gardens are so messy.
- Past simple
- This tense is used in conditional sentences type 2
- Ex: If I were you, I would not do that.
- S + used to V + when + S + V(past simple)
- Ex: I used to go to school by bike when I was in high school.
- Past perfect
- Past perfect + by the time + past simple
- Ex: He had worked for the company for 25 years by the time he retired.
- Used in conditional sentences type 3
- Ex: If I had gone to bed early last night, I would not have been late for school.
- Future simple
- S + think/predict/be sure/expect that + S + V(future simple)
- Ex: Experts predict that the interest rates will be left unchanged.
- Future perfect tense
- Future perfect tense + by/by the time/before + Present simple
- Ex: She will have served on the Board of West Coast College for 20 years by the time she retires.
- Exceptions
- S + request /suggest/ propose/ demand/ recommend/ insist/ urge/ require/ ask/ request] + that + S + bare-infinitive.
- Ex: Mr. Jackson requested that his order be received before tomorrow morning.
- It is important [vital/ imperative/ mandatory/ necessary/ difficult/ compulsory/ essential/ crucial] + that + S+(should) + bare infinitive
- Ex: It is important that you be thorough about your background and qualifications when filling out your job application.

II. TIPS ON PASSIVE VOICE

8. Verbs with active forms but having passive meanings.
- Some verbs followed by V-ing stay in active forms but have passive meanings. (V-ing replaces: Tobe + Vpp)
Deserve/ require/ want/ need + V-ing/ Tobe + Vpp.
Ex: The old closet needs painting. = The old closet needs to be painted.
9. Verbs cannot be used in passive voice - Intransitive verbs cannot be used in passive voice:
Appear, arrive, become, come, exist, happen, remain, stay, take place, occur
Ex: Some of the items I ordered arrived 2 days ago. - Verbs refer to owning/ feeling meanings.
Become, belong to, have, lack, meet, resemble
Ex: These files and discs belong to the Sales Department.
The manager became the general manager when I got back from my business trip.
10. Some special passive structures
