Listening Comprehension
Part 1: Picture – 20 Questions
You will hear 4 short statements about a picture. Choose the statement that best describes what you see in the picture.

Part 2: Question Response – 30 Questions
You will hear a question and three responses. Choose the correct response.
Strategies:
There are two kinds of questions:
- Question word (asking for information): Who, what, when, where, why, how much/many/long/far
- Auxiliaries (asking for a yes/no answer): is, are, was, were, can, will, etc.
Listen carefully to the first word of the question and decide what it is asking.
Think about what kind of answer is correct.
Tricks:
- Similar words used in answer
- Who came first? She spoke first.
- His name is lost on the list.
- I arrived before the others. (I offered before the others.)
- The correct answer often uses synonyms.
- (came/arrived)
- Yes or No are not often used.
- Are you going? Of course.
- Not til tomorrow.
- If you go, too.
Part 3: Short Conversations – 30 Questions
You will hear short conversations between two people. You will read a question about each conversation. Choose the best answer.
Strategy: Read then listen.
- Don’t listen to the instructions.
- Quickly read the questions and answer choices before you listen!
- Listen only for the answer.
- Try to answer as soon as you know the answer to the question.
- Read the next question before the next short conversation.
- Don’t listen then read. Always read then listen.
Tricks:
- Similar sounds
- He didn’t like the color.
- He didn’t like the collar.
- Similar words
- She has gained weight.
- She doesn’t like to wait.
Part 4: Short Talks – 20 Questions
You will hear short talks. You will read two or more questions about each talk. Choose the best answer.
Strategy: Read then listen.
- Don’t listen to the instructions.
- Quickly read the questions and answer choices before you listen!
- Listen only for the answer.
- Try to answer as soon as you know the answer to the question. Don’t wait.
- Read the next questions before the next short conversation.
